Brockton Man Pleads Guilty in South Africa Travel Insurance Fraud
A Brockton man pleaded guilty and another case was continued without a finding for two years on two counts of filing a false insurance claim, and two counts of larceny over $1200. The Brockton man alleged that around March 8, 2017, he suffered from gastrointestinal issues on his trip to South Africa. He alleged that various medical facilities in Africa treated him on an inpatient basis from March 8-9 and March 11, 2017, and then March 12-15, 2017, on an outpatient basis. The Brockton man allegedly stated that he paid cash for his medical treatments and requested to be reimbursed $6,532 for his medical claim. The Brockton man obtained separate policies before his trip to South Africa and submitted medical claims with each carrier allegedly using the same documents upon return.
Investigation revealed that the medical documentation submitted by the Brockton man was identical in both claims and many of the phone numbers listed on the medical records the Brockton man submitted were not valid. The medical diagnoses of the doctor, and the medical diagnosis the Brockton man allegedly reported, differed. In addition, the doctor could not verify the medical bill and whether the Brockton man paid it. Medical treatment facilities that the Brockton man reported having attended in South Africa could not confirm the Brockton man’s admission or the medical treatments he claimed to have received at those clinics. Further investigation revealed that the doctor is not a registered or accredited medical doctor. One of the medical facilities at which the Brockton man is alleged to have sought medical treatment, does not exist at the address on the medical documents. The medical clinic at that address is a rehabilitation-only facility for stroke victims and does not accept acute emergency patients. Investigation confirmed that the Brockton man was never a patient at that facility or any medical facility at which he allegedly sought treatment. The charges and bills for the medical treatments were fraudulent.
