Crash Preceded Coverage in Fraud Case Against Billerica Woman
A Billerica woman was placed on pre-trial probation for six months on charges of motor vehicle insurance fraud and leaving the scene of property damage. On February 9, 2023, the Billerica woman made a payment to Progressive Insurance Company to reinstate the automobile policy on her 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. She completed a Statement of No Loss Form for the period from January 24 to February 9, 2023, confirming the Jeep had not been in an accident. On February 17, 2023, the Billerica woman reported to Progressive that on February 15, 2023, her Jeep was hit while parked causing damage to the front right quarter panel area.
Investigation revealed that a photo submitted by the Billerica woman showing damage to the Cherokee was taken on February 5, 2023, before her insurance coverage had been reinstated. On February 28, 2023, Progressive received a subrogation notice from Mapfre Insurance Company, stating that the Billerica woman’s vehicle had struck their insured’s 2024 Toyota Tacoma on February 3, 2023, in a mall parking lot before fleeing the scene. The Billerica woman later admitted to hitting the Mapfre insured vehicle at the same location.
